Profile of a Learner at Creekside
RENEE HOLMES

By Ben Thompson, Teacher

Student ownership of their learning is a high priority in Scott County Schools. At Creekside Elementary, fifth grade students are using tools they learn in the Leader in Me curriculum to help them meet the criteria of Scott County’s Profile of a Learner.

Fifth grade students at Creekside receive Leader in Me lessons each day. The lessons cover different ways students can use The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People in their school day to be successful. Students have the opportunity to reflect on their learning and translate their successes to the six key attributes identified in Scott County’s Profile of a Learner: Communicator, Collaborator, Problem Solver, Citizen, Learner, and Leader.

While Creekside students work daily in the classroom to meet the guidelines for the Profile of a Learner, the fifth grade team of Harley Anderson, Kaziah LaFrange, Amy Stuck, and Ben Thompson at Creekside Elementary are planning more leadership opportunities for their students.

This fall, Creekside Elementary will start an ambassador program for fifth grade students that will give them the chance to be leaders for the school. They will have the responsibility of helping in lower grades, leading building tours, and guiding parents at after school events. Our fifth grade teachers want to help create a culture where students lead and help each other. They want to give students more voice and empower them to create change at Creekside

Leader in Me at PHC
RENEE HOLMES

By Tommy Fitzpatrick, Principal

This school year, Scott County Schools have introduced The Leader in Me initiative across the district, inspired by Stephen R. Covey's renowned book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. This initiative aims to create a unified leadership culture within the district, ensuring that all students, regardless of their grade level or school, can communicate effectively using the same leadership principles.

The seven habits that form the foundation of the initiative are: Be Proactive, Begin With The End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw.

To introduce these habits to students, Phoenix Horizon Community (PHC) have incorporated a daily session called PHamily Time. Each day, students are introduced to a new habit through a video and its definition. This structured approach ensures that every student is familiar with the habits and understands their significance.

On August 23, 2024, Phoenix Horizon hosted a Leader in Me kickoff celebration. The event, attended by students, parents, guardians, and central office staff, began with a light breakfast followed by a presentation on the seven habits and how they are integrated into the daily curriculum. As a part of the celebration, each student received a shirt with "The Leader In Me at PHC" emblazoned on it, marking a spirited beginning to the school year.

This initiative promises to be an excellent way to foster leadership and personal growth in students, setting a positive tone for the year ahead.
