 Crossing Procedure for Students

                             Crossing Procedure for Students

All students from Preschool thru Twelfth Grade shall use the safe crossing procedures set forth in this policy. These procedures are in place for safety of all students transported by the Scott County Schools Transportation Department and the State Education Department. Any student not utilizing the following procedures can be suspended from the bus for non compliance with the safety regulations set forth.

The student shall wait on the sidewalk until the bus has stopped and the Air Brake is applied and the student is signaled by the driver to approach the bus.

If the student lives on the opposite side of the road and must cross the road, the student shall wait until the driver gives the universal signal to cross. (The driver points two fingers at the student and when it is safe the driver uses a sweeping motion to let the student know it is safe to cross.)

If the student lives on the opposite side of the street and must cross the road, the student shall not cross the road before arrival of the bus. They are to only cross when the bus has stopped and the driver gives the student the universal signal to cross the road.

When the driver gives the signal, the student shall look both ways up and down the road to make sure all traffic has stopped and that a vehicle is not trying to go around the bus that the driver may not see.

The student shall cross ONLY in front of the bus and NOT behind the bus.

The danger zone around the bus where the driver cannot see the blind spots in the mirror extend 15 feet to the side of the bus.

Never let your child run after a bus. The driver may not see them when pulling away.

Never cross behind a bus due to the driver may back up and not see a child behind the bus.

Have the children always use the sidewalk when approaching the bus and if the driver closes the door do not approach the bus and bang on the door!!

Be at your bus stop five minutes before the arrival of the bus.

When disembarking from the bus the student shall check to make sure a vehicle is not passing on the right side of the bus. Children are taught to check before you step off the bus.

The student after getting off the bus goes up to the front of the bus approximately 10 feet and waits for the drivers signal to cross. Children are taught “I can see the driver and the driver can see me.” This is where the students makes eye contact with the driver and waits for their signal to cross. Once the signal has been given to the student to cross, then the student stops on the left front corner of the bus and checks to make sure all traffic has stopped before proceeding the rest of the way across the road.

If the driver blows the horn then it means “Danger” that the driver sees a vehicle that is not stopping and the student is taught to go back to where they started from.

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ARE ASKED NOT TO TELL STUDENTS TO CROSS THE ROADWAY OR WAVE STUDENTS ACROSS THE ROAD AS THIS COULD RESULT IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION!

LET THE STUDENT WATCH THE DRIVER FOR THE UNIVERSAL SIGNAL AND FOR THE STUDENT TO FOLLOW SAFE CROSSING PROCEDURES.

MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE ALSO TO FOLLOW THE SAFE CROSSING PROCEDURES!!!!
