Schools Welcome Renowned Author

Reading came to life last week at Lemons Mill, Southern, and Stamping Ground Elementary schools.  Renowned author Patricia Polacco visited each school sharing her experiences as a playwright, storyteller, and author of 115 children’s books.

To have a guest author visit a school is an exciting event all on its own.  But the activities leading up to the special day helped build anticipation for students from the start of the school year.  School librarian Jill Anderson described a few of the many activities that helped students at Southern prepare for their special guest.  Several classes read Rechenka’s Eggs, a story about an injured goose who breaks painted eggs intended for a traditional Russian celebration.  Young students decorated eggs of their own to adorn the walls of the school.

Students also read Thank You, Mr. Falker which inspired their own thank you letters to teachers who have made a difference in their lives.  One student thanked his former teacher April Wilhoite. Wilhoite is a fourth grade teacher at Southern.

                        Dear Mrs. Wilhoite,

I just want to thank you for helping me control my anger.  You figured out all these strategies to help me learn and focus on what we were learning and what I needed help on.  You were always there for me.

A visit from Polacco has been Anderson’s dream for years.  She was thrilled to have this dream come true to the benefit of her students as well as students from Lemons Mill and Stamping Ground.  Polacco shared time, and stories, with all grades, relating the life experiences that have influenced her work.  Her legacy is long-lasting at Southern.  The school will offer a Storytelling Club this year.
