Nutrition Tasting Fair Gives Students a Voice

In a continual effort to offer the highest quality, most nutritious and appealing menu for students, school nutrition managers from each school invited a select group of students to attend a recent tasting fair held at Elkhorn Crossing School.  Each in line with local, state and national nutrition guidelines, students had the opportunity to voice their opinion on a variety of foods which may soon be part of the school menu.

"We want to know how you feel about these products.  Do you like them?  Would you eat them at school?"  School Nutrition Director Eleanor Hall addressed the audience, hungry to learn more.  "This is something we have never done before.  Students from every school are here today and we need your help."

Selections like the roasted vegetable quesidilla warranted an eager reaction from Southern Elementary student Layne Mulloy, "That sounds good!"  Other items included whole grain pancakes, waffles and biscuits, fruit smoothies and sweet potato fries, among dozens of others.  Each student had a favorite.

Brett Blair from Southern liked the fruit smooties available in a variety of flavors, blueberry, strawberry, blackberry---you name it.  "It was really good!" said Blair. 

Eastern Elementary Physical Education teacher Kathy Hill liked the idea of the sweet potato puff.  "I've never seen this before, I love sweet potatoes."

Northern Elementary School student Kaden Grizzle, who identifies himself as a picky eater, really liked the ultimate oatmeal breakfast cookie.  His friend Evan Leaverton couldn't quite decide saying, "I like everything."

The Department of School Nutrition will now tally the voting for each product as they work out the details for a nutritious school breakfast and lunch menu for the 2012-2013 school year.
