Results of the state assessment administered in the spring of 2015 show continued improvement for Scott County Schools. Scott County Schools is classified as a Proficient school district narrowly missing a ranking of Distinguished by a mere three-tenths of a point. This ties Scott County at #51 among 173 school districts as ranked by the Kentucky Department of Education. Only two districts in central Kentucky rank higher, Boyle and Woodford.
“The gains we continue to experience are due to the hard work of our students, teachers, and administrators,” Scott County Superintendent Patricia Putty stated. “We personalize learning to meet the needs of each student. While test scores do not define us, the scores certainly show evidence that our students are learning at high levels.”
The release of state assessment data provides many reasons to celebrate. In 2015, Stamping Ground Elementary School was ranked Distinguished earning acclaim as a School of Distinction for the first time. This honor is reserved for schools in Kentucky who rank at the 95th percentile or above. Northern Elementary School was again ranked Distinguished earning classification as a School of Distinction for the third consecutive year. Northern is ranked #17 of 712 elementary schools. Western Elementary ranks Distinguished and is in the High Performing School reward category. Royal Spring Middle School ranked #75 of 327 middle schools and has earned a Distinguished ranking each year since introduction of the Unbridled Learning assessment model in 2011-2012.
Scott County schools concentrate on growth and continuous improvement. Scott County Middle School improved their overall score by 5.7 points. This earned SCMS a Proficient/High Progress ranking as they were in the top 10% of middle schools in the state for improvement. Anne Mason and Southern Elementary schools were both in the Needs Improvement category in 2014. Both schools have made effective use of regular, ongoing, balanced assessments to identify the learning needs of individual students and put in place specific interventions to meet these needs. In 2015, both schools showed notable improvement advancing to the Proficient ranking.
Lemons Mill Elementary again ranked Proficient which is a significant accomplishment for a school that doubled in size with the opening of Phase II in 2014-2015. By its very design, Lemons Mill has built a strong culture centered on collaboration. Eastern Elementary School received a Proficient ranking in 2015 experiencing a decrease in overall score from 73.1 to 69.5. Scott County High School continues as a Proficient ranking school showing sustained growth in 2015. The classification of Proficient is awarded to schools between the 70th and 90th percentiles.
State assessment results also provide a measure of needed improvement. Garth Elementary and Georgetown Middle School received a classification of Needs Improvement which is given to schools and districts at the 69th percentile and below. Garth is noted as a Progressing school improving its overall score by five (5) points. This is an indicator of strong growth at Garth. At Garth and GMS, steps for improvement are well underway. Individual student achievement is analyzed on a weekly basis and guides high quality instruction. Both schools provide differentiated professional development for teachers to build strong leadership teams.
In the coming weeks, parents will receive individual student scores. This important information will let parents know how their child performed in each area tested at the respective grade level. Once distributed, teachers will be available to address questions regarding student-specific data.
