2017 Battle of the Books

Scott County elementary school students converged at Elkhorn Crossing School this week sparring for first place in the seventh annual Battle of the Books.  Each of eight elementary schools selected teams of fourth and fifth grade students who read a selection of novels over the course of the year.

The reading list was developed by school librarians who worked together to make this special opportunity possible for students.  The reading list includes award-winning titles and librarian recommendations.  The list is updated each year to peak student interest.  This year’s list includes student-favorites: Bunnicula, Frindle, Holes, Ida B, and I Funny

Cooper Anderson, a fifth grade student at Southern, has many favorites but, when pressed, decided that Here Lies Link was the best among them because it is a mystery.  Gretchen Hamilton from Northern likes Mountain Dog.

After a morning of preliminary rounds, the teams were seeded for afternoon tournament play.  Student teams answered a variety of questions about each book related to author, setting, characters, and plot.  At the start of the tournament bracket, Anne Mason Elementary was first seed followed by Southern Elementary in second.

After a series of elimination rounds, Anne Mason and Southern eventually squared off in the finals.  Southern Elementary School secured its first tournament win and was named champion of the 2017 Battle of the Books.

Congratulations to students from all teams who worked hard and showed strong character and good sportsmanship during this friendly competition.
