Backpack Program Meets Student Needs
Each day many students rely on healthy breakfast and lunch meals served at school to provide the daily nutrition needed to learn. For many, these meals may be the most nutritious they have throughout the week. For others, they may be the only meals on which they can rely. In such cases, weekends and breaks from school mean something entirely different.
In an effort to educate the whole child, elementary and middle schools have developed an innovative solution to childhood hunger. Schools stock backpacks with nutritious foods which are easy for students to open and prepare. These backpacks go home with students on Friday and are returned Monday. Hundreds of students eagerly anticipate getting a backpack each week. Numerous community organizations and volunteers support this worthwhile initiative through donations of food, money and time.
School Social Worker Carol Wilson made a significant observation that has the potential to change the lives of students in grades 9-12 in Scott County. Childhood hunger does not disappear just because the student transitions to high school. In her work at Cardinal Academy, Wilson realized many high schools students were hungry and often went without adequate food during weekends and breaks from school. This set in motion a community-wide effort to bring the successful backpack program to secondary schools in Scott County.
On Saturday, September 22, Wilson and her dedicated colleagues will host Cardinals Hustle Against Hunger. The 5K Run/Walk has been planned in conjunction with John's Run/Walk Shop. Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for students with proceeds benefiting the school backpack food program for grades 9-12. The race begins at 8:00am on Memorial Drive near the Georgetown College entrance.
The race was made possible through the thoughtful support of community partners including:
