Board Meeting Summary 08-06-13

During the work session of the Scott County Board of Education held on August 6, 2013, Superintendent Patricia Putty reflected on the events of the week sharing details of the incredible Opening Day for staff and successful start of school.  “It has truly been awesome,” Superintendent Putty stated, “Staff members from across the district have commented on the value and significance of the Opening Day program.  The hard work and enthusiasm of our teachers and staff were evident on the first day of school for students.”  Putty noted the smooth back to school transition for all schools in the district.

Mr. Tim Lucas, architect from the Kentucky Department of Education, discussed the process to convene the Local Planning Commission (LPC) and develop a plan for facilities for Scott County Schools in 2014.  Lucas noted that a Facility Plan is revised for school districts every four years to consider demographics, projected enrollment, and funding streams for renovation and construction projects.  Lucas stated that Scott County is a robust and dynamic district but cautioned that increasing enrollment brings challenges which facility plans address.  The LPC serves as an ad hoc committee under the direction of the Scott County Board of Education and includes parents, teachers, administrators, and Board of Education members as well as Planning and Zoning and community representatives.  This discussion is relevant to future planning for a second high school.

Mr. Tim Geegan, Vice President of Alliance Corporation made members of the Board aware of an on-going evaluation of the site construction associated with Phase I of Lemons Mill Elementary School and discussed future steps to ensure work to the grounds are completed as contracted.

Board members then discussed the architectural renderings of softball and baseball fields to be completed on the Lemons Mill site.  They asked for additional drawings of the athletic facilities on the property to ensure all needs are met for the proposed site.  The Board will review and compare draft plans at the September meeting.

In other business, the Board discussed the format for upcoming community forums scheduled for August 29th at 6:30pm at Scott County High School and September 19th at 6:30pm at Elkhorn Crossing School to gather information about a second high school.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Mrs. Putty shared observations from visits to every school on the first day and continually praised teachers and staff for their dedication to student achievement.  The opening of Lemons Mill Elementary was an exciting event.  Across the district students, teachers, and staff celebrated the first day reunion.  Warm smiles, kind words, and helpful reminders were readily available as students and staff alike settled into new routines.

The next meeting of the Scott County Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 6:30pm at Central Office.
