Informational Notice Referencing Lockdown

Five of our schools (Anne Mason, Royal Spring, Scott County Middle, Scott County High, and the 9th Grade School) went into lock down today for a brief period of time after students outside at Anne Mason thought they heard gunshots in the neighborhood.  Law Enforcement immediately investigated and determined that the noise came from a car backfiring.  Everyone was safe and we want to compliment and commend our schools and local law enforcement for handling things appropriately.

Parent-Teacher Talks

SCHS will host parent-teacher talks Tuesday March 18.

Emails are usually the best and quickest way to maintain teacher to parent communication, and we encourage you to continue with that strategy. However, as an additional resource, we are making face-to-face meetings available March 18 from 4:30 pm until 7 pm. If you would like to schedule a meeting time, please email the teacher(s) directly with your request so that the teacher can schedule you in. In the event a teacher is not available for the time requested on the 18th, the teacher can work with you to schedule a different meeting time and date. If you are not able to email, please phone the front office for assistance.

These meetings are intended to provide opportunities for parents to talk with individual teachers. If you feel your need is best met through a meeting with all your student’s teachers at one time, please contact the counseling office to schedule a conference for an alternate date and time.

End of Course testing

SCHS has been informed by the Kentucky Department of Education to suspend EOC testing until technical problems have been resolved. As soon as we have clear direction, we will establish and communicate a schedule to complete these exams.

End of Course testing

Our End of Course computer based assessments have run into problems that have impacted testers statewide. The entire state is feeling the impact, but we regret the extra stress this puts on our SCHS students and staff.

The technical issues originated on the  ACT/Vantage side and created small problems Monday and Tuesday. Today’s impact was more significant, creating problems for Scott County High School students scheduled to test in Biology.  Students in the first session of testing were able to complete the first multiple choice section of testing and will be scheduled to take the second section at a later time this week.  We have cancelled the 11-1 testing session and those students will also be rescheduled.  At this time, we are still planning to test students scheduled for the 1-3 session but are awaiting word from ACT and KDE that the problems have been corrected.  We have spoken directly with the Office of Assessment and Accountability in Frankfort and they have assured us they will afford us every opportunity to be sure ALL of our students have a successful testing experience.  We remain hopeful and will work to provide the best environment here for our testers.

Scott County Schools will conduct kindergarten registration for all elementary schools at the Georgetown Wal-Mart and Kroger on May 2 and 3.  Hours are 1:00pm – 3:00pm at Wal-Mart and 4:00pm – 6:00pm at Kroger.

Important Announcement Exclamation Point

Attention Parents:
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens in KY.  In an attempt to address this problem the state requires schools to deliver a program to students designed to reduce the risk. SCHS, ECS and the 9th Grade School will deliver a state-approved program to students prior to September 1. We share this with you now so that you are aware that the topic will likely be on your student’s mind, and you are prepared to provide additional support. This mandate is in its third year, so the topic is not new to your student.

Graduation Information

Many families are beginning to look toward the end of the year, and we are starting to get some questions about graduation. Our commencement ceremony is most likely to fall on May 25, June 1 or June 8, though if we have a very rough winter it could conceivably be later.

Until we see what kind of winter is in store, a more accurate guess is just not possible. Typically by the end of February we’ve got a better sense of it and can then provide better information.  We will update you at that point.

ESS Tutoring Schedule and RTI Information

We have tutoring options available for all students in math, social studies, and English after school.  The schedule is as follows:

Math  (all sessions run from 4-5 pm)
Monday:  Mr. Oppelt - Rm 222
Tuesday:  Ms. Gifford - Rm 248
Wednesday: Ms. Robinson - Rm 280
Thursday:  Ms. Robinson - Rm 280

English (sessions run from 4-5 pm)
Thursday:  Mrs. Beckett - Rm. 532

Social Studies (sessions run from 3:50-4:50)
Tuesday:  Mrs. Sunda - Rm. 242

In addition, all students can access Khan Academy online where they can find short tutorial videos on many different subject areas, especially in math and science.  Our math and science teachers highly recommend this website!  It is a great resource to bookmark in your computer and keep handy when students are working on homework.  The website is www.khanacademy.org

We also recommend that you contact your student’s teachers to find out what days they have available to meet with their students after school.  Most of them have at least a day or two they work with their own students on an as needed basis.

RTI – Sessions are offered before school and after school for students who want to minimize the amount of time they are pulled out of class.  For each before school or after school session that a student attends, they will receive a pass that allows them to miss one RTI session during the regular school day.  The extra sessions are offered:

Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:45 – 8:35 a.m.

Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:50 – 4:40 p.m.

Attendance Requirements

Parents, it’s possible your student may not have shared the school’s attendance rules with you. For that reason, I’m providing below the text of a letter seniors are receiving so you, too, are aware of the school’s attendance policies. Underclassmen have the same attendance expectations, with consequences including events such as Prom.

To monitor your student’s attendance, you can access the attendance records through the parent portal of Infinite Campus.  If you need further help with this, please contact our school guidance office.  New Kentucky law makes some additional changes that may impact your student. Those changes are described here as well.
