My name is Grace Downey, and I am excited to teach the future graduating class of 2022 this year!

I am a Kentucky native from Lexington, where I graduated from Bryan Station High School.  Afterward, I went to college and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in May 2013 with a Middle Grades Science and Mathematics Education degree.  I also hold an Environmental Education endorsement from Eastern Kentucky University, which means I am certified to teach environmental education to kids grades PreK-12, inside and outside of formal classrooms.  Last year, I began graduate courses to earn my master's degree in STEM Education from the University of Kentucky. I am also currently the GMS science department chairperson, and a member of the leadership team.

Outside of Georgetown Middle School, I love being an active member of the community.  I am a member of the Lexington Environmental Commission (District 6), which promotes environmental awareness and education to the Lexington-Fayette County region.  I am also a member of our Lexington Black Widows Rugby Club, which just graduated to Division II in the Midwest Conference within USA Rugby.  Currently, I am working with former players and educators in central Kentucky to promote middle/high school youth rugby.

When I am not in class, I love to spend time with my family and friends, I love being outdoors and I am always up for trying new things whether it be new activities, new food or new ideas for class!  As a teen I was very active in school, and I encourage everyone to get involved in extra-curricular activities and try new things!

My goal this year is to use hands-on project learning as well as many other resources to teach you/your students natural sciences content while instilling a sense of community service awareness and a sense of citizenship in their school, neighborhoods and community. Although some of the content we cover in class may be challenging for the students, I am confident that we will exceed with great effort and enthusiasm for learning!

If you ever have any questions, feel free to email me at katherine.downey@scott.kyschools.us or call/text 507.369.3691 (I have planning from 9:45-10:15 AM and again from 1:30-2:00 PM)!
