RSMS Earns National Acclaim

Royal Spring Middle Earns National Acclaim for Energy Conservation

Royal Spring Middle School is among the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award honorees.  This exciting announcement was made on April 22, 2015.  Across the country, 58 schools and 14 districts were honored for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education.

“These honorees are compelling examples of the ways schools can help children build real-world skillsets, cut school costs, and provide healthy learning environments,” Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. “U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools are an inspiration and deserve the spotlight for embodying strong examples of innovative learning and civic engagement.”

RSMS boasts an active energy and environment club, affectionately known as the Green Team.  Conservation and sustainability efforts are student-led at RSMS including a school-wide recycling program and tree-planting projects.  The Green Team also hosts an Energy Carnival each year, which is open to the entire Georgetown/Scott County community.  The Green Team participates in the Power Police, a school club that patrols the school hallways looking for ways to reduce energy consumption.  The school reduced energy consumption 30.6 percent from 2009 to 2013.  Water consumption reduced by 13 percent.

“We are extremely proud of our Green Team and their leadership in sustainable practices in reducing costs, improving health, and affecting our environment through education,” commented Principal Shannon Gullett.  “BW Thornton is an outstanding teacher leader.  He continues to grow awareness and responsibility in our staff and students through his Green Team club along with colleague Sarah White.”

Congratulations to Royal Spring Middle School on this distinguished honor.  It will be added to an inventory of accolades for the school which has received five ENERGY STAR awards as well as two Environmental Educator awards.  Kentucky First Lady Jane Beshear recently presented RSMS with the Kentucky Green Ribbon School award.  Scott County Schools was named 2015 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year from the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
