Superintendent Patricia Putty recognized the heroic efforts of Eastern Elementary School Principal Ed Denney. Last week, Denney performed the Heimlich maneuver to save the life of a choking child. Superintendent Putty spoke of Denney’s strong character and dedication to his school and applauded his willingness to continually go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety, well-being, and academic achievement of his students. The gallery shared this sentiment honoring Mr. Denney with a standing ovation.
Board members discussed the master site plan of the new 1500 student high school with Mike Smith, Principal Architect with Sherman Carter Barnhart. Smith shared a revised timeline of the project which aligns with recent changes in the meeting schedule of the Scott County Board of Education. Overall, the schedule and completion date remain consistent with the opening of Phase I for 700 students in August 2017. Smith spoke briefly about upcoming phases in the design and construction of the building. After the approval of the master plan, a schematic design will be developed to further specify the use of space in the facility.
As items of discussion, Superintendent Patricia Putty and board members shared ideas about the arrangement of the cafeteria and the desire to optimize the beautiful view of the school property on US460 West/Frankfort Road adjacent to Elkhorn Crossing School. During previous meetings, outdoor eating and classroom space were important considerations for students and have been included in the master site plan which also provides options for future anticipated expansion. The Scott County Board of Education approved Master Site Plan “H” which was developed through months of meetings, discussion, revision, and input from students, parents, teachers, administrators, community members, and the Scott County Board of Education.
In other business, board members approved authorized signors on Garth Elementary School activity accounts and the athletic agreement between Scott County Schools and Georgetown Scott County Parks and Recreation for use of the Pavilion by student swim and dive teams. Members Jennifer Holbert and Stephanie Powers will review bills monthly prior to approval by the Scott County Board of Education.
Board members discussed the structure and procedures to govern future board meetings. The Superintendent’s Report focuses on student achievement, celebrates outstanding accomplishments, and highlights upcoming school and district activities. This important overview will now be moved closer to the beginning of each meeting. Members discussed specifics related to the packet of support documentation for each board meeting as well as the placement and structure of public comment/questions at these meetings. They also generated ideas to publicize the board meeting schedule and extend an invitation to community members to attend meetings of the Scott County Board of Education. Board members discussed the integrated pest management efforts throughout the district as well as the favorable community response to online open enrollment and the community campaign to select a name, mascot, and colors for the new high school. Ideas are welcome and can be emailed to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
During the Superintendent’s Report, Mrs. Putty proposed upcoming training initiatives to provide an overview of the entire school construction process for the benefit of new board members. New members Kevin Kidwell and Stephanie Powers were in favor of this training. Members will develop goals and supporting action plans at the work session scheduled for February 5, 2015 at 6:30pm at Georgetown Middle School. All schools will have the opportunity to make a presentation and share dialogue with board members in the coming months. Superintendent Putty thanked sponsors and community partners for their support of the Toyota Classic and urged board and audience members to support the Scott County Cardinals. This is the 20th anniversary of the celebrated basketball tournament which supports valuable school activities and is an asset for our local economy.
