Board Summary

In a continuing effort toward creating a collaborative culture, please find a summary of the special-called Scott County Board of Education meeting on September 29, 2014. This is being forwarded to all employees and parents/community via e-communications. This is merely a summary and not to be perceived as official board minutes.

 

 

During the September 29, 2014 meeting of the Scott County Board of Education, members discussed and approved submission of a General Mills Sales Community Grant.  Stamping Ground Elementary School Counselor Dianne Lloyd will write the grant in collaboration with the Scott County Family Resource Center which serves Northern, Southern, and Stamping Ground.  If funded, the grant will ensure healthy foods as part of the school backpack snack program as well as family health fairs and exercise and nutrition clubs for students.

The remainder of the meeting included thoughtful discussion with architects designing the new high school.  Members of the board reviewed number, size, and types of classrooms, common areas, and administrative space.  Discussion included overall planned space for the 1500 capacity high school which must be considered during the design phase as well as the program for Phase I which will open for 700 students in August 2017.  Architects shared the model program developed by the Kentucky Department of Education as a starting point for the discussion.  Board members incorporated ideas shared during a recent meeting with teachers and staff as well as those ideas brainstormed during the meeting of students, parents, and community members held on September 22.

At the conclusion of the meeting, members of the Scott County Board of Education and district staff had developed a comprehensive program for the first phase of the high school facility which includes 21 regular classrooms, four science lecture labs, kitchen, cafeteria, special education classroom, agricultural classroom,  family consumer science room and a music room to initially be shared by vocal music and band, among other spaces and amenities.  A gymnasium is listed as an alternate to the Phase I plan. Special consideration was given to ensure equity in courses and program offerings between the district’s two high school facilities.
