Smith Named Preschool Principal

Jennifer Smith has been selected as Principal of the Scott County Preschool Center located at 1300 Long Lick Road.  Last year, more than 350 students were enrolled in the public preschool program which provides developmental and age appropriate educational experiences based on individual needs of three and four year old children in Scott County.

Smith has been an early childhood educator in Scott County for 10 years.  She was first hired as an Early Childhood Specialist and Teacher and then Director for the Scott County Even Start program before becoming a Preschool Teacher Western Elementary School in 2005.  Most recently serving in an administrator role, Smith has worked to develop the preschool curriculum and provide support to staff, students, and parents.

Jennifer Smith is a graduate of the University of Kentucky where she completed the Early Childhood Special Education program and holds a Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership Studies in addition to Rank 1 certification, Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education teaching certificate, and Principal certification.

Smith describes preschool education in Scott County, “I believe that preschool is important to establish a strong foundation for academic success.  Our program offers pre-writing and pre-reading experiences in addition to opportunities to learn and practice appropriate social skills, develop self-help skills, and strengthen communication skills with both peers and adults.  Our students explore their world and experience a wide range of activities including art, math, science, literacy, and physical education.”

The Scott County preschool staff will start developmental screenings for children and families interested in enrollment beginning August 7, 2013.  This service is free to any family living in Scott County with a child ages 3-4 years.  Interested families can contact the Scott County Preschool Center at (502) 868-0411.

“Our goal is to create a solid foundation for educational success and to provide support and resources to the families of the children we serve,” Smith commented.

Smith lives in Georgetown with her two children.  Hunter is a senior at Scott County High School and Janie is a freshman at Scott County Ninth Grade School.
