Results of the state assessment, administered at each school in Kentucky in the spring of 2013, show continued progress for Scott County Schools. The overall district score as well the state ranking highlight positive results. The district advanced from a 77th percentile ranking to the 82nd percentile.
“This rise in ranking is indicative of our teachers’ intentional focus on student growth and their attentiveness to individual student academic needs,” Scott County Superintendent, Patricia Putty, explained. “We have much to celebrate; our students, staff, and administrators are to be commended. It is always rewarding to witness success, especially when you know the long hours, training, and dedication that our staff has devoted. I especially want to congratulate our students- these are your scores and I am very proud of your achievement!”
Two highlights in the district include Scott County High School and Northern Elementary School. Scott County High School has much to celebrate, advancing from a classification of Needs Improvement to Proficient. On the state assessment, SCHS excelled from the 65th percentile to the 87th percentile.

We know the improvements are the result of much intentional hard work by teachers and we’re gratified that our students responded with their own optimism and dedication. We have so much quality learning here, and our results give us the confidence to forge ahead with our partners, lifting our students ever higher,” state Frank Howatt, Scott County High School Principal.
Northern Elementary School has earned the prestigious title; School of Distinction. Overall, students at Northern performed at the 98th percentile. Northern principal Judi Hunter praised the work being done at the school, “I am just so proud of our students, faculty, staff, and parents. It is a team effort.”
Three schools maintained their previous classification but showed marked gains in student performance on the state assessment. Stamping Ground Elementary Schools is a Proficient school which made a five (5) point gain on the 2013 assessment. Georgetown Middle School and Southern Elementary School are identified as Needs Improvement/Progressing schools. Georgetown Middle School made a 3.4 point gain while Southern improved 1.7 points overall.
Including Scott County High School’s Proficient designation, five schools in our district changed classification. Eastern Elementary School, Western Elementary School, and Royal Spring Middle School were previously classified as Distinguished but achieved a Proficient ranking this year while Garth Elementary School moved from Proficient to Needs Improvement. As Focus schools in 2012, Georgetown Middle School and Scott County Middle School remain in this category as it requires multiple years to advance this distinction.
Two interventions are already in place to help improve student achievement at all schools in the district. Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) is a school-level assessment which provides valuable data to help individual students in Math and Language Arts. This assessment provides immediate results to meet student needs and is administered three times per year in grades K-9. All schools continue to concentrate focus on each student making at least one year of growth. This is consistent in the expectations for both students who struggle academically as well as those who master material quickly and have need for advanced rigor.
In the coming weeks, schools will send individual student scores home for parent review. This important information will let parents know how their child performed in each area tested at the respective grade level. Once distributed, teachers will be available to address questions regarding student-specific data.
