Dear Students, Parents, and Community of Southern Elementary,
I wanted to share with you what I can about an incident which occurred today at Southern. A student brought pieces of an unloaded paintball gun to school and showed it to a few students this morning. There were no paintballs with it, and the item was incapable of operation.
We are very pleased that students immediately told teachers who notified me. As soon as I became aware, I retrieved the item and removed the student from the classroom for questioning. The student said he brought it to show others and did not want to harm or scare anyone.
As a school we acted quickly, immediately notifying Georgetown Police Department and Central Office. Both responded within minutes. In our school district, we take safety very seriously and strictly follow our code of conduct guidelines in our work with law enforcement.
As a family, please remind students to report any potentially unsafe conditions to an adult immediately. We are thankful our students did this today.
We appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Georgetown Police Department and school district personnel for their quick response and assistance in this matter. While we cannot provide any additional information about this situation due to confidentiality, please know we are working closely with the legal system and following the district code of conduct to resolve this situation. Thank you.
