Board Meeting Summary 4-21-16

In a continuing effort toward creating a collaborative culture, please find a summary of the Scott County Board of Education meeting on April 21, 2016. This is being forwarded to all employees and parents/community via e-communications. This is merely a summary and not to be perceived as official board minutes.

 

The Scott County Board of Education met on April 21, 2016 at 6:30pm at the Great Crossing Office Complex.  Superintendent Patricia Putty recognized three teachers who have recently earned National Board Certification.  Crissy Ellison and Katie Price teach at Lemons Mill Elementary School.  Elizabeth Mills is a teacher at Royal Spring Middle School.  This outstanding accomplishment is the gold standard in teacher certification.  Next, Energy Manager Jim McClanahan presented the Scott County Board of Education with the Energy Star Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award.  This is the third time Scott County Schools has earned this prestigious award for energy efficiency and cost saving initiatives. 

 

During the Superintendent’s Report, Superintendent Putty recognized Eastern Elementary School which was recently named a Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.  Eastern joins Royal Spring Middle School, Northern Elementary School, and Georgetown Middle School as recipients of this honor.  A record number of students met qualification to be recognized as the 2016 valedictorians of Scott County High School and were honored at the recent Georgetown/Scott County Chamber of Commerce banquet.  MAP testing is underway and state assessments will soon begin in Scott County.  K-Prep testing starts May 10.  Advanced Placement testing will start the first week of May.

 

In other business, the Scott County Board of Education approved minutes, donations, fundraisers, fees, and grants as presented.  Board members approved the use of common carriers noting the importance of students loading and unloading common carrier buses safely.  Next members voted to renew a contract with Bluegrass Business Health to provide drug testing services and approved an athletic agreement with Georgetown Scott County Parks & Recreation for use by the swim team at Scott County High School.  Bluegrass Business Health will provide physical examinations for newly hired classified employees as well as bus driver D.O.T. exams and the administration of the D.O.T. substance abuse program.  Members also approved an agreement between Scott County Schools and Safe & Civil Schools before adding authorized signors on the school activity accounts listed. 

 

Board members approved Emergency Certification for Substitute Teachers and approved the Summer Feeding Program for 2016.  Lunch will be available for anyone under 19 years old Monday through Friday, June 5-July 15 from 11:30am-12:30pm at Southern and Garth Elementary schools and Ed Davis Learning Center.  Breakfast will be served from 8:30-9:00am at Southern.  Meals will not be served on July 4, 2016 in observance of Independence Day.  In other business, board members voted to increase meal prices by 10 cents for the 2016-2017 in response to a mandate by the federal government.

 

Next board members approved a Director of Accounting position and approved the revised job descriptions as listed.  Jim McClanahan shared information with the board about levels of possible funding for energy projects through LGE/KU.  The Scott County Board of Education conducted a second reading with minor revision and approval of two policies before hearing the Financial Statement, Personnel Report, and Field Trip Report.  Board members approved current bills and discussed the upcoming contract signing ceremony and community meet and greet with Superintendent Dr. Kevin Hub to be held from 3-5:00pm at Sunday, May 1 at Elkhorn Crossing School.  The board voted to hold a special called meeting at 5:00pm on April 26 to discuss the details of the contract.  Members also discussed the recent publication of legal notices for the position of Board Attorney.

 

The Scott County Board of Education will conduct a work session on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 6:30pm at the Great Crossing Office Complex.
