Local Planning Committee Parent Representative Sought

Dear Parents,

   Every four (4) years the district is required to write a district facility plan that must be approved by the local Board of Education as well as the State Board of Education.  This plan serves as a blueprint for new construction or any renovations/additions to our current district facilities. The plan outlines the priorities based on district facility need.

     The local planning committee (LPC) is charged with writing the District Facility Plan. Selection of the LPC membership is regulated by statute.  For a district the size of Scott County, we are required to have 20 members: the District Facilities Director, a Board of Education member, 3 community leaders, 4 parents, 4 building administrators, 4 teachers, a Central Office representative, a local planning & zoning official and the Superintendent. Our school was randomly selected to provide a parent representative to the committee.  In accordance with regulation, “the parent representative shall be selected by the PTO/PTA in each school center. If no PTO/PTA exists, the largest organization of parents formed for this purpose shall select a parent representative for their school. The parent representative shall not be employed by the school district or serve on the local board of education”. They must be a resident of Scott County. Schools always question as to whether or not the parent representative on the SBDM can serve on the LPC. The answer is yes.  In fact, we are required to have at least 4 of the members of the LPC to be SBDM members. Our school was not randomly selected to have a SBDM member but if selected by the parent organization, they can obviously serve.

     Parents often inquire about the time commitment to serve on this committee.  We are required to have at minimum three (3) meetings. The reality is it takes about 5 meetings to complete the analysis of the buildings, to prioritize needs, and to write the plan. All meetings will be held after 5:30 p.m. on a week day in order to accommodate the open meeting policy.
