OUR KIDS CAN'T WAIT!

OUR KIDS CAN’T WAIT!

EXPECTATIONS UP, RESOURCES DOWN

Kentucky’s General Assembly convenes Tuesday, January 7 and your help is needed.

As part of a statewide initiative, please deliver the following message to your Senator and Representative by telephone on January 7:

You can leave a message for both your Senator and Representatives at (800) 372-7181.

Our Kids Can’t Wait. They have only one chance for a quality education.  Stop the education cuts and restore education funding. Specifically, we need the General Assembly to:

  • Restore funding for the basic school funding formula to 2008-09 levels
  • Restore support for textbooks, preschool, safe schools programs, teachers’ professional development, and tutoring to 2007-08 levels
  • Provide funding for technology to increase capacity and speed so students can connect to the instructional tools they need

Kentucky's goal is for all students to graduate from high school and be ready for college and careers.

As a state, we have committed to these much higher standards, but state funding has declined in program after program that supports our students' learning.

It's time to invest in our children, providing the vital financial assistance required to meet our bold new goals.

The graphs below show the key reductions in funding over the last six years.

The Kentucky Education Action Team (KEAT) is spearheading the campaign. KEAT is an advocacy group representing all public education groups: Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, KY Assoc. of School Superintendents (KASS), KY PTA, KY Education Assoc. (KEA), KY Assoc. of School Administrators (KASA), KY Assoc. of School Councils (KASC), KY School Boards Assoc. (KSBA), and KY Retired Teachers Assoc. (KRTA).

Please lend your voice to the campaign by making a quick phone call to your legislators in Frankfort.  Your message will be added to the thousands of educators and citizens calling in this day.  At the end of the day, the number of calls will help determine the amount of attention devoted to education funding during this legislative session.

We are very fortunate that we have legislators in Scott Co. who are supportive of education.  Don’t forget we now have 3 representatives; Ryan Quarles, Tom McKee, and Brian Linder. Your state Senator is Damon Thayer. Please let them know how strongly you feel about restoring our educational funding.

You can leave a message for both your Senator and Representatives at (800) 372-7181.

So why the urgency?  During this session, the General Assembly will create a two year state budget. Kentucky schools cannot continue to persevere these reductions. Please, take a few minutes from your hectic schedule to make this critical call.

As a state, we must stand united and find our voice for the future of our students and the future of our Commonwealth!
