Community Forum Held

Scott County Schools hosted the first of two open forums to share information and encourage discussion regarding Lemons Mill Elementary School which will open Phase I in August 2013.  Families whose addresses fall within the potential boundary lines for Phase I of the school were invited to attend the forum.  The event was communicated via the district website and e-communication system in addition to local media.

More than 60 individuals attended the information session which lasted two hours and included audience questions and dialogue with district administrators and members of the community work group.  The drafted boundary line proposal will soon be reviewed by the Scott County Board of Education.

During the meeting parents were given the opportunity to complete an Intent to Enroll Form for Lemons Mill Elementary and could also turn in a request to stay at the current school which will be carefully considered on an individual basis.  Limited open enrollment and its potential impact on both Lemons Mill Elementary School and Eastern Elementary School was an important topic of discussion.

Parents generated more than 30 questions in addition to the Frequently Asked Questions list provided by Scott County Schools.  Transportation issues like busing to the school from surrounding neighborhoods and to local daycares were included among these.  Lemons Mill will provide busing service for all students.  Walking will be prohibited until the necessary infrastructure is in place to provide safe passage for students to walk to school.  There were even questions from potential Lemons Mill Elementary students.

The Principal of Lemons Mill Elementary School will be officially named by April 1, 2013.  Because school enrollment will primarily consist of students already accounted for in the district, there will be opportunity for teachers and staff from other schools to request to transfer to Lemons Mill.

Parents wondered about logistics like enrolling at the new school and transferring records and also wanted to ensure services would exist at Lemons Mill to meet student needs.  Like all schools in our district, Lemons Mill Elementary School will provide programming for special education, gifted and talented, Reponse to Intervention (RtI), and English as a Second Language (ESL), among other services, which will meet the diverse learning needs of students.

“We had a positive audience and a thorough discussion.  As a district we were able to provide insight as to how we arrived at these recommendations.  It is a very important decision for parents who want what is best for their children,” commented Dr. Rick Culross, Director of Student Services, who facilitated the forum.

A second forum is scheduled on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 7:00am at Elkhorn Crossing School to accommodate those who work second or third shifts or who were unable to attend Monday evening.
