Fifth Grade Early Morning Book Club

5th grade Early Morning Book Club from Western Elementary.
These students were led by School Psychologist, Tammy Bisotti and Western Librarian, Carrie Garrett in a discussion of the book Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine, which won the 2010 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. The book explores the life of a young girl, Caitlyn, with Asperger’s Syndrome as she and her father mourn the loss of her brother. Caitlyn’s struggle understanding emotions contributes to the depth of the novel. Written in first person from Caitlyn’s perspective, readers learn the challenges of those with Asperger’s.  The students in the book club were guided by Mrs. Garrett and Mrs. Bisotti through the complex issues of death, empathy, forgiveness and closure. A new book, Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, will be the focus of the Book Club starting in January.
