The Early College Advantage
For the first time this year, 37 seniors in Scott County have the opportunity to earn college credit for coursework completed during their high school career. Students are enrolled in two courses this semester, English 101 or 102 and Communication 181 through a collaborative partnership which brings Bluegress Community and Technical College professors to the Elkhorn Crossing campus.
This is a viable partnership for students and parents. Total this year, students can earn 12 credit hours which will transfer to any state school for half the cost of general BCTC admission. When they start college in the fall of 2012, students have the potential to be classified as sophomores.
Students have reasons of their own for choosing Early College. One student believes this program is signficant because he can use his time now to get general education requirements out of the way. "There is more one-on-one with the professor in a class of 10 compared to a class of 200," he said.
With plans to enter the Air National Guard upon graduation, this individual will then start the Eastern Kentucky University Paramedic Program before completing his degree at the University of Kentucky. In addition to leveraging college credit at reduced cost during high school, he will be able to utilize the G.I. bill to complete his college education. Now that is planning for the future!
A fellow classmate plans to attend Hanover College and is aware that all of the credits earned will not transfer to the private, out-of-state university. She is enrolled in Early College to prepare for next year. This program strengthens study skills and helps students adapt to independent learning. She is already thankful for what this experience has taught.
Students had to apply and obtain benchmark scores on the ACT to qualify for Early College. If they did not meet the required scores they were able to take the COMPASS test to achieve qualifying scores. Next semester students will enroll in a mathematics course and an elective which will be determined based on student input.
"Here we are responsible for our own education," a student summarized the Early College experience.
